Hex 1.1
A classic board game played on a field of hexagons. White tries to build a path connecting the top and bottom while black tries to block it and build a path connecting the left and right sides. Invented in the 1940s, Hex is known for the simplicity of its rules and the complexity of its play. This game is in many “Best of Macintosh Games” collections, for example, the Mac Shareware 500 and BMUG (Berkeley Mac User’s group). Shareware, $5.
Lines of Action 1.0a
This board game was invented in the late 1960s by veteran gamester Claude Soucie. Formerly known mainly to board game specialists, LOA is finally reaching a wider audience due to its computer implementation. Played on a standard 8x8 checkerboard, LOA uses a novel method of movement to achieve a novel goal of linking two separated armies while trying to prevent the opponent from doing the same. This program has achieved recognition for its excellent interface and play. Shareware, $10.
TextMangler 2.1.2
A “nonsense processor”. Takes any text file as input. The output is nonsense based on the original input and can be saved as a separate text file. The results can be very amusing. The algorithm is based on Markov chains as explained in a recent Scientific American article. Also calculates letter frequencies. Shareware, $10.
PrimeFactor 1.1.6
A simple factoring program which factors numbers up to nineteen digits long into their prime factors. Fast on numbers up to ten digits; longer ones can be slow. Relies on a tables of primes to find small factors, Fermat’s method to find factors near the square root of a number, and brute force to find any others. This is the only factoring program I have seen that has a full Macintosh interface and not an irritating “command line” interface. Educational and fun, too. Shareware, $5.
Nine Men's Morris 2.0
An ancient board game, older than chess. This implementation allows for 27 different variations of the basic game, including 18 variations of Twelve Men's Morris (a modern treatment of the ancient rules). Registered owners ($6) can play against the computer in four levels of increasing difficulty.
For all the above software at least one Mb of RAM and System 6.0.5 or better is recommended. All are System 7 compatible.
